California-based Beyond Meat has been all over the news lately with their pea protein patty for vegans, veggies and those trying to lessen their environmental footprint.
You've likely seen Beyond Meat on A&W or Tim Hortons billboards, as here in Toronto these two fast food chains have quickly jumped on the pea protein band wagon. You can also find Beyond Meat meatless options in local grocers.
Why pea protein? Vegetarian patties in the past were mostly soy based. Over the years, soy has gotten some bad press with its potential phytoestrogen effects (not necessarily proven), the fact that a fair number of individuals are allergic to soy, and how soy is the number one genetically modified crop in the world.
And with Health Canada’s new Food Guide, which encourages us all to try to add a little vegetarian into our lifestyles, Beyond Meat and pea protein in general is getting a lot of positive attention.
Did you know that we too have Beyond Meat burgers right here at the ORC? It’s a new menu item, I’m going to try it out this week. If you try it too please let me know what you think!
