Super Food Run-Down: Hemp Seeds

Last week I thought I’d be bold and suggest to my teenage daughter to try some hemp seeds on her cereal. I told her ‘it's a Super Food!’There's a lot to like about these powerful little antioxidants. Hemp seeds are a vegetarian source of protein and contain all essential amino acids. They have a healthy balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 essential fatty acids with a perfect 3 to 1 ratio. They contain a long list of nutrients including iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and B vitamins.

Despite all this, I wasn't sure my daughter would give hemp seeds a go.

But she did - and better still - she really liked the light, nutty flavour! She even asked where they were afterwards so she can add regularly to breakfast. Of course, I directed her to the fridge - as they are best kept refrigerated.

Hemp seeds are soft, easy to digest and less allergenic than other seeds. Not only are they great on cereal but also when added to yogurt, salads, and blended into smoothies.

And because I know you're worried (or at least curious), hemp is a species of Cannabis sativa BUT hemp foods contain less than 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and will NOT cause a psychoactive effect or a false-positive drug test. They're not THAT kind of a super food.
